A Year in the Life of Oberlin College

"A Year in the Life of Oberlin College"
A photo a day in Oberlin, mostly taken by Ma'ayan.

"Cinema studies major Ma'ayan Plaut '10 chronicled her experiences as an Oberlin student by taking a photo each day of the year. This web site features a selection of her images, beginning with those taken in the fall of 2006. Ma'ayan's photographs reflect her personal interests and Oberlin experiences - living and eating in a co-op, art, music, OCircus!, and observing the changing seasons on campus."

Go here to see it! It's really awesome! Ma'ayan is amazing! Go do it! THIS POSTER CONTAINS VISUALS OF NEARLY EVERYONE AND EVERYTHING I'VE EVER LOVED IN THE PAST 2 YEARS. From taiko to circus; Catherine to Grey; trees in winter and neon lawns in summer.

Yours,
Aries

PS: This is why I have a tag called "ma'ayan plaut is my hero."

The kitchen is warm

Sometimes, I really struggle to say the things I mean.

I'm really glad Ma'ayan is in my life.

In other news, my Storytelling Exco show went well. Thoughts soon. Must doubly emphasize story length and motion next time.

I think I tell love stories because I find them scarier than horror stories.

Holidays

Posting again... how many months has it been?

It gets dark in Edinburgh at around 4 PM, and the heating in my flat doesn't work very well. Meaning that it's fucking cold in here, but I think I'm getting used to it.

My life is going pretty well... I have a room, I have a job. A pretty crappy job, cleaning student rooms at Herriot-Watt University. Trying to work to the changing standards of neurotic supervisors. I also do catering for the local fancy hotel. Alistair Darling, the Chancellor of the Exchequer, was there for one of the events, talking to the Edinburgh Insurance Broker's Association. And then I did an event for the NATO conference as well--I got called in to do it as I was sitting in the computer room of the Forest Cafe, the headquarters of the anti-NATO movement.

There had been police hanging outside of the Forest for days. Watching the people going in and out, just in case they do something unacceptable, or perhaps just to intimidate them into submission. I don't see why they're so worried about these activists anyway. As far as I've seen, all they do is start protests and then get in trouble. The government ignores the protests. I suppose the trouble is bad for the image of the police, and the protests at least hint at the possibility of doing something against our rapidly developing police state...

In other news, I have been involved in the Spiritualist Church, which talks to spirits, and doing acrobatics with the Samhuinn people, and reiki. Oh yes, Samhuinn. If you're friends with me on facebook, you've seen me with my face painted blue, at the Samhuinn ritual--like a Pagan Halloween with more drunken, semi-naked hippies and fire and screaming, and less candy.

And now I have to go get presents for my flatmates. Goddamnit. Too much to do... too little time...

So hello there, in forever of a time we have not been speaking

So! Yes.

Finally, the weather has settled down to being Winter, and doing its job of making everyone hate everything. This became official yesterday, when frozen spit a "wintry mix" of rain and snow splattered sideways all over New York.

And I... am good. I've got a lot of things going on, lots of projects - I now have monthly gatherings I frequent, some of which I play music at; I'm blogging for a cool vegan blog, you might have to scroll down a fair bit to get to my first post (it's got pictures of bananas in it).

In the last three days, I've been to three big craft shows/holiday parties, spent three evenings hanging out with 20, 8 and 4 people respectively, seen a lovely movie, played music at a house party, had a relaxing evening at home, etc. It sounds like it wouldn't all fit in three days, but it has... (Oh dear, just spilled rice all over desk and floor) I'm meeting people, acquaintances so far but v. interesting ones. I also have secret schemes, but they are secret.

The running/vegan stuff is good, and very time-consuming, but very good. Being healthy makes me feel like a person moving through the world, instead of a bobbing papier-mache head. I feel like I have fingers and toes and emotions and things. Looking for a part-time job to supplement the copyediting work I'm doing, long may it reign.

Perhaps at some future point I will sign on here with the urge to say juicy shifting things, instead of dry updates. But for now, it feels as though I have found a solid surface to stand on, a place from which to look around and take stock. I have a winter coat, I like riding the subway, I hoard candy canes and peppermints that I get for free, I have many little moments of contentment and beauty throughout each day.
